In Love with an Island
As I stood on the island dock breathing in the salt air, every cell in my body came alive! For the first time in my life, I was home!
I grew up painting in watercolor at my mother's side and living all over the world where my Air Force father was stationed. As an adult I kept moving, never staying in one place long enough to put down roots. Now I was finally home, home on this island in Puget Sound.
This island is where my heart lives, where I struggled to keep food on the table and a roof over the heads of my three sons, where I learned to paint on silk, to create stained glass windows, where I put my feet firmly on a spiritual path, where I learned to love—and the whole world opened up!
On this island, I have lived in a remodeled chicken coop without indoor plumbing or electricity. We trudged through the snow to the well and to the outhouse. On this island, I have lived in a 100 year old farm house, a VW van, a garage made into a studio apartment, and now a house of my own design with big south facing windows, a block up from the beach where I do Qi Gung.
On this island I have poured out my soul in worship with Pentecostals, sat in silence with Quakers, chanted with Buddhists, danced in ecstasy with friends, turned with Sufi. On this island I've found Joy (she lives down a long trail in a cabin overlooking the water). On this island I've found Love that transcends the death of my soulmate, Love that continues to live and grow with my beloved dervish husband, and I wake up singing Halleluiah!
I want to share this joy with you, through my paintings, through my writings, and through my fabrics and wearable art. I want you to join me in this journey, this path that travels the world and always leads back home to the love and joy I have found on this island. I want to hear your stories, share your insights, and to walk hand in hand with you as we walk the Golden Pathway together.
Will you join me?
